Bar Transfer Course (BTC)
For barristers & solicitors in Nigeria
Nigeria's common-law tradition means the courtroom craft you already practise is what the courts of England & Wales are looking for — your call to the Nigerian bar is the foundation of this route.
Your practice stays where it is. Study is online and paced for practitioners — from Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt, without surrendering your NBA membership or your clients.
England is for the milestones only: the assessments, the ten Qualifying Sessions every transferring lawyer completes with the Inn, and the Call ceremony. We help you consolidate those into as few trips as possible.
Three or more years appearing before Nigerian courts is the profile the strongest route was designed for — confirm yours in two minutes.

Every BSB document — and where you get it in Nigeria
The BSB's document list is written in UK terminology. Here is what each item is called in Nigeria, and which body issues it — so you never have to guess which local document matches which requirement.
BSB asks for
Certificate of Good Standing
From each regulator or professional body you are regulated by or registered with. An admission certificate is not accepted as a replacement.
In Nigeria, that means
Certificate of Good Standing from the Supreme Court registry, with a good-standing letter from your NBA branch
From: The Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria (Roll of Legal Practitioners); your Nigerian Bar Association branch
Your Call to Bar certificate is an admission certificate — the BSB does not accept it as proof of good standing. Ask the Supreme Court registry for a current enrolment/good-standing letter.
BSB asks for
Certificate(s) of recognition of rights of audience
Evidence of the rights of audience you hold. Confirmation of completing rights assessments with a training provider is not sufficient on its own.
In Nigeria, that means
Confirmation of enrolment as a Legal Practitioner entitled to appear as barrister and solicitor before Nigerian courts

BSB asks for
Chronological CV
Educational qualifications and employment history, with the job title and a list of duties for each role.

BSB asks for
Certificates & transcripts of formal qualifications
From undergraduate degree level onwards — academic, vocational and professional awards. Transcripts must show modules studied, marks obtained, overall classification or grade, and dates of study.
In Nigeria, that means
University degree certificate + transcript, and your Nigerian Law School qualifying certificate
From: Your university; the Nigerian Law School (Council of Legal Education) for the qualifying certificate
Transcripts must show courses, grades, class of degree, and dates — request the full academic transcript from the registry, not the notification of result.
BSB asks for
Certified English translations
Required for any document not originally produced in English.
In Nigeria, that means
Certified English translations — rarely needed, as Nigerian legal documents issue in English

BSB asks for
Case list (where applicable)
Significant criminal and/or civil cases where you appeared as an advocate, emphasising cases you led on your feet. A separate document, preferably tabular: case title/number/citation, court or tribunal, month(s)/year(s) heard, a short summary and outcome, and your role (leading, assisting). Confirmation from the court or a supervisor's co-signature is recommended where possible.

Tabular list of significant matters you conducted as counsel
From: Compiled by you from chambers and court records
Cite NWLR or the court's citation where reported; state your role (lead counsel, junior) and the court, from Magistrates' to the Supreme Court.

Reference / experience letters
Letters from referees who can speak to your legal experience and practice.
In Nigeria, that means
Reference letters from Senior Advocates of Nigeria, principals, or judges who know your work

Local names and issuing bodies were checked against Nigeria's own regulators and statutes — verify them yourself below. Regulators change their processes, so once you apply, your advisor confirms the exact list for your profile before you request anything.

Indicative travel
Two things do bring you to the United Kingdom: the 10 Qualifying Sessions every transferring lawyer completes with the Inn, and your Call to the Bar. Budget your own airfare and stay for those, and we'll help you group them into as few trips as the Inn's calendar allows. Your assessments may not add another trip: some are sat online and some in person, and in some countries, including Pakistan, the in-person papers can be sat locally through a British Council centre. Ask BPP how and where each of yours is sat for your country before you book any flights for them.
$2,100 to Blackstone + ~£2,420 to UK bodies + BPP's assessment fees + your travel.
BPP sets its own assessment fees and publishes no fixed figure, so confirm current rates with BPP directly. We'd rather leave a gap here than quote you a number we can't stand behind.
14 days to change your mind
Your first $210 registers your place and is documented in your portal, and it is not a commitment you cannot walk back. Change your mind within 14 days of enrolment and we refund your tuition in full, provided the course has not substantially begun. After the 14 days you can still cancel future installments; fees for months you have already accessed are non-refundable.
Fees paid directly to UK bodies are governed by those bodies' own refund rules, not ours. Read the full terms.
UK fees are paid directly to the Bar Standards Board, your Inn of Court, and BPP. They are set by those bodies and subject to change, and every figure links to the source it was verified against in August 2026.
